Cloud transformation – Technology

Herman Rensink, Data center Architect / CISSP.

Here I talk about the technological transformation which is one of the 3 key areas besides organisational and procedural.

Transformation is a continuous process and is done in steps that can be overseen and done. It is NOT a radical change but rather a good managed process with vision and understanding of the Cloud. What important considerations should be taken into account when you do a technological transformation! Here are the six considerations!

Change.JPGFirst – On the very basic level you start with a Software-defined data centers (SDDC) with racked and ready hardware capacity. This capacity must be turned on and paid for when needed.Hardware is commodity and is just a X86-machine. Hard disks are a just a bunch of disks (JBD). The hardware is completely transparent and is managed by software.

Second – The Software-defined hardware platforms are platforms that enables high levels of automation, assurance, scaling and tightly managed bench marked prices for compute and storage capacity.

Third – Software-defined networks (SDN) enables end-to-end connectivity without restrictions on the management of physical networks. SDN supports the instant creation of VLAN’s (logical networks) and Firewall of every type (state-full, stateless, application proxy) and many other network devices. Important is to understand is that the creation is based on policies and are VM-Centric.

Fourth – Open platform and container technologies that avoid lock-in and foster multi-vendor optimisation. In computing, an open platform (it is not the same as open source!) describes a software systems which is based on open standards and standard API’S that allow using the software to function in other ways than the original programmer intended, without requirinppg modification of the source code.

Fifth – Cloud management and orchestration technologies that are fit for an agile way of working, balancing governance rather than overly restrictive controls. Orchestration supports a dynamic data center together with service-oriented architecture and hyper converged infrastructure. The key value of orchestration  is about aligning the business request with the applications, data, and infrastructure. It is based on policies and service levels, automated workflows, provisioning, and change management (together with asses management and proper documentation). Orchestration is also about billing, metering, and charge back for consumption.

Sixth – Operational and business support systems that energise DevOps rather than restricting them. DevOps is a culture, movement and practice. Collaboration and communication are important factors between software development – and IT department. The aim is automating the process (building, testing, and releasing software ) of software delivery and infrastructure changes in an rapid and solid way.
